Be structured and brief
  • Key message should come out early in the essay.
Highlight your leadership experience in your essay
  • Resumes are often insufficient to highlight leadership potential and McKinsey is looking for leaders.
  • Your essay is an opportunity to support your resume. If there is something distinctive that is mentioned in your resume, please give specific examples/facts in your essay to communicate your experience both attractively and faithfully.
For significant achievement, show the impact you have created
  • Along with stating your significant achievement, when explaining the reasons, try to show the impact you have created. This can be impact on people or financial value created.
Think about unique experience and topics to be more attractive
  • A very practical tip for male candidates is to avoid writing about military experience unless it is truly distinctive. It will be hard to distinguish yourself since many people write about military service and often times say very similar things.
