Business Technology Office Asia
Technology is increasingly a priority item on the top-management agendas of many companies. Hence, fluency in technology will be one of the hallmarks of the next generation of top business leaders.
Our clients turn to McKinsey for objective advice on using technology to achieve their strategic business goals. To meet this growing need, McKinsey established the Business Technology Office (BTO) in 1997. Since then, McKinsey has set up BTO practices in most countries around the world and launched its Asian operations in 2000.
McKinsey's business technology work provides exciting opportunities for technology professionals to apply their expertise while developing the same business problem-solving and leadership skills for which McKinsey consultants are renowned.
Mission

"Create lasting value for our clients as independent top management advisors on leveraging information technology for business strategies"

Our consultants
BTO consultants share three common characteristics; they possess outstanding and distinctive talent in a particular industry or knowledge area; they demonstrate a strong commitment to solving IT problems for our clients; and they share English as a common language. Beyond this, the BTO's international culture represents a rich diversity of individuals from all over the world. In Asia alone, BTO has offices in six countries with 40 consultants representing 17 different nationalities. There is no "typical" consultant profile, as some join us straight out of school, while others join us after gaining business and IT experience. If you are looking for an opportunity to work with distinctive people from different cultures and professional and personal backgrounds, McKinsey's BTO may be a good fit for you.
As BTO is an integral part of McKinsey, it is organized in the same way as the other offices within the firm. BTO consultants work alongside other McKinsey consultants and follow the same career and professional development paths. A key difference is that BTO is not defined by geographical location, but functions instead as "one global office" linked by a common interest in business technology.

Our work
In Asia, our Business Technology Office mainly serves the financial services, high-tech, telecommunications, and energy sectors.
In the financial services industry, we advise clients across a broad range of technology and operations strategies, including credit risk management, core-banking-systems integration, technology architectures supporting distribution channels, and large-scale business process offshoring and outsourcing initiatives
For high-tech clients, much of our work is in supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, logistics, purchasing management and product development
We support our telecommunications clients on technology issues in customer care, business support systems (BSS), operations support systems (OSS), and network management systems
In energy and petrochemicals, we help clients redesign core business and management processes and address the IT implications of deregulation and increased competition/li>
Depending on the client situation, teams may be staffed exclusively by BTO consultants or - as is often the case - with a mix of consultants from various McKinsey offices and practices. In either case, BTO consultants gain exposure to a wide variety of strategic management issues, not all of which may be technology-related.
