Most of our Associates join us with an advanced (or second) degree and/or several years of work experience. Their academic disciplines extend far beyond business. Many hold law degrees, medical degrees, and/or doctorates in wide variety of fields - from economics to anthropology.

Shaping Your Own Career
- We affirmed our belief that Associates should play a major role in shaping their own careers with our decision to provide greater transparency, choice, and flexibility in engagement assignments. In early 2000, we implemented our global preference-based staffing system known internally as "VOX" (Visibility, Options, Expression of preference). The availability of the VOX system further extends the influence that our consultants have over what they do in the firm next week, next month or next year.

Immediate Impact
- Whichever path you choose - early specialization or a deliberately broad experience - you will be a full member of each engagement team you join, beginning with your first assignment. You will be expected to identify issues, develop hypotheses, structure and conduct analyses, synthesize recommendations, and present results to client leaders.

Advancement
- Your level of responsibility and pace of advancement to a team leadership role will be limited only by your demonstrated ability. We reward superior performers with superior compensation and rapid advancement. When ready, Associates move into the role of Engagement Manager. Once Associates become Engagement Managers they become eligible for designation as an Associate Principal.

Thrive in a Culture of Meritocracy
- McKinsey operates as a meritocracy, a place that identifies, encourages, and rewards talent and leadership. Our advancement and compensation decisions are based on an explicit, regular, fair and open evaluation process. Criteria for formal reviews include growth in skills and demonstrated leadership in the areas of client, people, knowledge and the Firm.
Associates take an active role in all aspects of an engagement - identifying issues, forming hypotheses, planning and conducting interviews and analyses, synthesizing conclusions into recommendations, and helping to implement change. As they gain skills and confidence, they will be asked to manage bigger pieces of the problem at hand.
Early on, most associates work on a broad range of industries and issues. As they progress, they usually develop in-depth knowledge (a "spike") in a specific industry or functional area.
