Home Careers Roles Business Analyst
We believe that bright, highly motivated recent entrants to the business world can bring a bold and fresh point of view to bear on our clients' problems. Our Business Analysts program provides recent college graduates, certain advanced degree holders, and individuals with relatively limited work experience with two to three years of McKinsey on-the-job learning opportunities and formal training.
It is a rewarding, high-energy introduction to the business of consulting.
Career Track
  • Our entry-level roles can serve as an introduction to a long-term consulting career at McKinsey & Company, or as a broadening experience for other careers.
  • Most Business Analysts pursue an advanced or second degree directly after leaving McKinsey; others choose to work in industry, with a nonprofit, or for a start-up before going back to school. Still other high-performers spend a third year with the Firm in a more specialized role or in an international location. Whatever path they take, many return to McKinsey as Associates after an external experience.
Stretch Yourself Further, Faster
  • From the outset, Pre-Associates work closely with senior client executives and McKinsey colleagues from around the world on problems and issues that are direction-setting and mission critical. As an active member of a client service team, you will have responsibility early on in your career for a discrete area of each project and are expected to contribute to the team's final recommendations. As you gain skills and confidence, you will be asked to tackle bigger pieces of the problem at hand. Your level of responsibility is limited only by your demonstrated ability. There are no pre-set limits to your role, and we provide ample opportunities for you to increase your skills and leadership abilities. The pace of your development depends on you.
Shaping Your Own Career
  • We affirmed our belief that Business Analysts should play a major role in shaping their own careers with our decision to provide greater transparency, choice, and flexibility in engagement assignments. In early 2000, we implemented our global preference-based staffing system known internally as "VOX" (Visibility, Options, Expression of preference). The availability of the VOX system further extends the influence that our consultants have over what they do in the firm next week, next month, or next year.
Thrive in a Culture of Meritocracy
  • McKinsey operates as a meritocracy, a place that identifies, encourages, and rewards talent and leadership. Our advancement and compensation decisions are based on an explicit, regular, fair and open evaluation process. Criteria for formal reviews include growth in skills and demonstrated leadership in the areas of client, people, knowledge and the Firm.
Business analysts take responsibility for a discrete part of the problem solving for each client engagement. They play a key role in data gathering, contribute to the team's final recommendations, and present their work to senior client executives. They also have a voice in determining the team's style and pace of work.
After the program, business analysts find many different ways to continue their personal and professional development. They often pursue advanced degrees or launch new careers in industry or with nonprofits. Many business analysts with M.B.A.s and other advanced degrees return to McKinsey as associates.
